# Adding a Licensing Area

In order to use this feature, be sure to enable [licensing](https://support.smarteru.com/docs/account-settings#enable-licensing) for your account.

SmarterU enables you to manage the various areas and regions associated with licensing agencies.

To add a licensing area:

1. From the Admin menu, select **Account Admin**.
2. Select **Licensing**. The [Licensing Dashboard](/v1/docs/licensing-dashboard) displays.
3. Click **Area/Region**.

A tab displays the Add/Edit Area workscreen.

1. Specify the [area's settings](/v1/docs/adding-a-licensing-area#settings).
2. Click **Save**.

You may now [add regions](/v1/docs/adding-a-licensing-region) to the area.

## Settings

### Name

The name of the licensing area.

### Status

The status of the licensing area:

- Active - The area may be associated with [certifications](/v1/docs/certification-licensing), [point trackers](/v1/docs/point-tracker-licensing), and [users](/v1/docs/user-licensing).
- Inactive - The area may not be associated with certifications, point trackers, and users.

### Description

A description of the licensing area.
