# Courses: Online

Online courses are [created in](/v1/docs/adding-an-online-course) and taken through SmarterU. You can identify online courses in the [Courses Dashboard](/v1/docs/courses-dashboard) by the ![Online Course 20210813](https://cdn.document360.io/7efaadab-fef6-4186-806a-2ca14c9ce9ea/Images/Documentation/Online%20Course%2020210813.png) that displays beside the course's name.

You can specify a number of different settings for each of your online courses. For example, you can specify [how a course is graded](/v1/docs/online-course-grading), whether it has [prerequisites](/v1/docs/course-prerequisites), and [which groups have access to it](/v1/docs/course-groups). Refer to [Adding an Online Course](/v1/docs/adding-an-online-course) for a complete list of the settings that are available for online courses.

The [Course Builder Dashboard](/v1/docs/course-builder-dashboard) makes it easy for you to add, manage, and preview the content in your courses. An online course's content is organized into one or more [chapters](/v1/docs/chapters) that contain [tasks](/v1/docs/tasks). Tasks can include [content slides](/v1/docs/content-slides), [PDFs](/v1/docs/pdfs), [videos](/v1/docs/videos), [activities](/v1/docs/activities), and [quizzes](/v1/docs/quizzes).
