## What's the difference between groups, teams, and organizations?

SmarterU provides a variety of ways to organize users in your account. The table below compares the [groups](/v1/docs/groups), [teams](/v1/docs/teams), and [organizations](/v1/docs/organizations) so that you can decide when to use each.

## How do I deactivate a group?

To deactivate a group:

1. [Edit the group](/v1/docs/editing-a-group).
2. Set the group's status to **Inactive**.
3. Click **Save**.

## How do I deactivate a group that has users in it?

To change a group's status to Inactive, you'll need to ensure that the group does NOT contain any active users.

You can do this by either [changing the status of all group users to *Inactive*](/v1/docs/group-faqs#changing-the-status-of-all-group-users-to-inactive), or [removing all users from the group](/v1/docs/group-faqs#removing-all-users-from-the-group).

### **Changing the Status of All Group Users to Inactive**

This option is easier if the group is the home group of any group users.

1. [View the group's details](/v1/docs/viewing-a-groups-details).
2. Expand the Users accordion.
3. For each user in the group:
  1. Click the user's name. The [Users Dashboard](/v1/docs/users-dashboard) displays the user's details.
  2. Click **Edit**.
  3. From the Login Information accordion, set the user's **Status** to *Inactive*.
  4. Click **Save**.
4. Set the group's **Status** to *Inactive*.
5. Click **Save**.

### **Removing All Users From the Group**

1. [View the group's details](/v1/docs/viewing-a-groups-details)
2. Expand the Users accordion.
3. If the group contains active users, click **Remove All** to remove all active users from the group. This won't remove users if this is their home group.
4. Click **Save**. The users are removed from the group.
5. Expand the Group Information accordion.
6. Set the group's **Status** to *Inactive*.
7. Click **Save**. The group's Status is changed to *Inactive*.

## Why can't I deactivate a group?

Only users with the appropriate permission such as [Group Manager](/v1/docs/group-permission-group-manager-gm) or [Admin access level](/v1/docs/user-profile-information#access-level) can deactivate a group. A group cannot be deactivated if the group still has users and the group is the [home group](/v1/docs/home-groups) for one or more users.

## Why are my users not being automatically enrolled in courses?

There are several things that you can do to determine why your group users are not being automatically enrolled in courses.

If you don't need to use subscriptions, ensure that the [](https://help.smarteru.com/group-courses$setting_subscr_lock)[**Subscr. Lock** setting for the group's courses](/v1/docs/group-courses#subscr-lock) [](https://help.smarteru.com/group-courses$setting_subscr_lock) is not checked.

If you want to [automate group enrollments](/v1/docs/automating-group-enrollments):

- Confirm that the [group's courses have their **Automation** setting enabled](/v1/docs/group-courses#automation). In other words, be sure the **Auto** setting is NOT set to *Do Not Auto-Enroll*.
- Confirm that the [account's **Group Enrollment Automation** setting is enabled](/v1/docs/account-enrollment-automation#enable-group-enrollment-automation).

If you are NOT automating group enrollments:

- Confirm that the group's courses have their [**Automation** setting set to *Do Not Auto-Enroll*](/v1/docs/group-courses#automation).
- Confirm that [](https://help.smarteru.com/editing-block-courses$setting_enable_auto_enroll)[courses associated with the user's learning plans have their **Automation Enrollment** setting](/v1/docs/editing-a-blocks-courses#automation-enrollment) [](https://help.smarteru.com/editing-block-courses$setting_enable_auto_enroll) set to *Do Not Auto-Enroll*.

If you are using learning plans:

- Confirm that the [**Automation Enrollment** setting for courses associated to the user's learning plan](/v1/docs/editing-a-blocks-courses#automation-enrollment) is enabled.
- Confirm that the [learning plan is assigned to the user](/v1/docs/assigning-learning-plans-to-a-user).

If you are using subscriptions:

- Confirm that the [](https://help.smarteru.com/variant-courses$setting_auto_enroll)[courses associated with the variant have their **Automation Enrollment** setting enabled](/v1/docs/variant-courses#automation-enrollment) [](https://help.smarteru.com/variant-courses$setting_auto_enroll).
- Confirm that [account's Group Enrollment Automation is enabled](/v1/docs/account-enrollment-automation#enable-group-enrollment-automation).
- Confirm that the [user is enrolled in the subscription](/v1/docs/enrolling-users).
- Confirm that the [subscription is in the user's home group](/v1/docs/group-subscriptions).

If you are using eCommerce:

- Confirm that the [subscription has been added to the eCommerce Storefront](/v1/docs/external-storefront-subscriptions).
- Confirm that the [subscription has been added to the eCommerce group](/v1/docs/group-subscriptions).
- Confirm that the [user is enrolled in the subscription](/v1/docs/enrolling-users).
- Confirm that [eCommerce is enabled in the subscription variant](/v1/docs/variant-main#ecommerce).

You can add [tags](/v1/docs/tags) to a group from either the [Tags accordion of the Add/Edit Group workscreen](/v1/docs/group-tags), or from the [Associations accordion of the Add/Edit Tag workscreen](/v1/docs/tag-associations).
