# Licensing Categories

In order to use this feature, be sure to enable [licensing](https://support.smarteru.com/docs/account-settings#enable-licensing) for your account.

SmarterU's [licensing feature](https://support.smarteru.com//v1/docs/licensing) enables you to track licenses and [certifications](https://support.smarteru.com//v1/docs/certifications) issued by [agencies](https://support.smarteru.com//v1/docs/licensing-agencies). Categories provide a way to organize and track learners' continuing education units (CEUs) for an agency's license. For example, the Agency of Financial Management may require learners who are pursuing the Certified Public Bookkeeper license to earn CEUs in four different categories:

| Category | CEUs |
| --- | --- |
| Bookkeeping | 40 |
| Accounting Principles | 25 |
| Payroll | 20 |
| Computerized Accounting | 15 |

By defining these categories in SmarterU, you can associate the category to relevant [courses](https://support.smarteru.com//v1/docs/courses). As learners complete the courses, you'll be able to track how many [points](https://support.smarteru.com//v1/docs/points-and-rewards) (or CEUs) they've earned toward each category of the license.
