# Requirement Blocks

A [requirement](https://support.smarteru.com//v1/docs/requirements) may have one or more *blocks*. A block contains the set of [courses](https://support.smarteru.com//v1/docs/editing-a-blocks-courses) or [actions](https://support.smarteru.com//v1/docs/editing-a-blocks-actions) that must be completed. When a requirement has multiple blocks, learners must complete the requirements in all blocks. For example, a learner may need to complete course A, and course B, and action X. In this example, the requirement would contain three requirement blocks.

Within each requirement block you can specify [alternate options](/v1/docs/adding-a-block-to-a-requirement#adding-an-alternate-option-for-a-block) that a learner has to fulfill the block. Alternate options provide learners with a choice in how they complete the requirement block. For example, you might want to allow learners to choose between completing action X, or completing course Z.

Alternate options might be useful in situations where you offer a course online and in-person. As long as learners complete the course, they can choose to take it online, or in-person.
