# User Access Roles

Learners, [course managers](/v1/docs/course-course-managers), and [administrators](/v1/docs/adding-an-administrator) - these are just some of the different kinds of people who use SmarterU.

Some users use SmarterU to take courses. Others perform specific functions in SmarterU such as managing online courses or teaching instructor-led courses.

Some users may have multiple reasons for using SmarterU. They might take classes, manage their group's users, grade long answer quiz questions, and oversee the progress of other users they supervise.

Then there are [administrators and owners](/v1/docs/user-profile-information#access-level); those users who have access to every function in SmarterU.

One thing all these different kinds of users have in common is that they have a SmarterU user account.

## User Access Roles

Keep reading to learn more about the different user types, what functions they're able to perform, and how they're created.

### **Learners**

#### **What Can They Do**

Access SmarterU courses through the learner interface.

#### How They're Created

Any SmarterU user can be a learner as long at least one course is assigned to their group.

### **Supervisors**

#### What Can They Do

Oversee the course progress of other SmarterU users. The information that supervisors are able to view will depend on the [account's **Supervisor Access** setting](/v1/docs/account-settings#supervisor-access).

#### How They're Created

Their name is selected from the [**Supervisor** list](/v1/docs/user-profile-information#supervisors) for a user.

### **Instructors**

#### What Can They Do

Manage the instructor-led course session for which they are an instructor.

#### How They're Created

Their name is selected from the **[](https://help.smarteru.com/ilt-session-session-details$setting_internal_instructors)**[**Internal Instructors** list](/v1/docs/instructor-led-session-session-details#internal-instructors) for an instructor-led session.

### **Graders**

#### What Can They Do

[Review and grade learners' responses](/v1/docs/quiz-grading-dashboard) to [long answer quiz questions](/v1/docs/quiz-question-general-preferences#type).

#### How They're Created

Their name is selected as a [grader for an online course's quiz](/v1/docs/quiz-graders).

### **Proctors**

**What Can They Do**

Run the [Proctor Report](/v1/docs/proctor-report) for [online course quizzes that have proctoring enabled](/v1/docs/enabling-quiz-proctoring).

**How They're Created**

They are [granted the Quiz Proctor group permission](/v1/docs/group-permission-quiz-proctor-qp) for one or more groups when their user account is [added](/v1/docs/adding-a-user-manually) or [edited](/v1/docs/editing-a-user-manually).

### **Course Managers**

#### What Can They Do

Edit an [online](/v1/docs/editing-an-online-course), [SCORM](/v1/docs/editing-a-scorm-course), or [instructor-led course's settings](/v1/docs/editing-an-instructor-led-course). The functions available to course managers will depend on the [account's Course Manager Access setting](/v1/docs/account-settings#course-manager-access).

#### How They're Created

Their name is selected as a [course manager for a course](/v1/docs/course-course-managers-1).

### **Group Permissions**

**What Can They Do**

Manage one or more aspects of the group. The functions they're able to perform for the group will depend on the [group permission(s)](/v1/docs/group-permissions-1) they've been granted.

#### How They're Created

In one of the following ways:

- They are [granted one or more group permissions](/v1/docs/user-group-permissions) when their user account is [added](/v1/docs/adding-a-user-manually) or [edited](/v1/docs/editing-a-user-manually).
- They are [granted one or more group permissions](/v1/docs/group-users) when a group is [added](/v1/docs/adding-a-group) or [edited](/v1/docs/editing-a-group).

### **Account Permissions**

#### **What Can They Do**

Manage one or more aspects of the account. The functions they're able to perform will depend on the [account permission(s)](/v1/docs/account-permissions) they've been granted.

#### **How They're Created**

They are [granted one or more account permissions](/v1/docs/user-account-permissions) when their user account is [added](/v1/docs/adding-a-user-manually) or [edited](/v1/docs/editing-a-user-manually).

### **Administrators**

#### What Can They Do

Manage all aspects of the SmarterU account. Administrators have access to all functions. Administrators may [add other administrators](/v1/docs/adding-an-administrator), but they cannot [edit the user information](/v1/docs/editing-a-user-manually) for other administrators or owners.

#### How They're Created

Their [user account's **Access Level** setting](/v1/docs/user-profile-information#access-level) is set to *Admin*.

### **Owners**

#### What Can They Do

Manage all aspects of the SmarterU account. Owners have access to all functions. Owners can add and [edit the user information](/v1/docs/editing-a-user-manually) of other owners and [administrators](/v1/docs/adding-an-administrator).

#### How They're Created

Their [user account's **Access Level** setting](/v1/docs/user-profile-information#access-level) is set to *Owner.*

## **Users and Their Reporting Access**

Understanding which reports and what information a user has access to depends on two factors:

- The user's access which is based on their group permissions, account permissions, and any "roles" (i.e., supervisor, instructor, grader, course manager, administrator) they've been assigned.
- The account's configuration. Specifically, whether the following are enabled for the account:
  - [Home Group Reporting](/v1/docs/account-settings#enable-home-group-reporting)
  - The [Supervisor Access setting's *Report on Enrollments* option](/v1/docs/account-settings#supervisor-access)
  - The [](https://help.smarteru.com/course-manager-access$report_on_enrollments)[Course Manager Access setting's *Report on Enrollments* option](/v1/docs/account-settings#course-manager-access) [](https://help.smarteru.com/course-manager-access$report_on_enrollments)

Although the View Quiz Analysis account permission grants the user access to the report, the user will still need either the [Group Manager](/v1/docs/group-permission-group-manager-gm) or [View Learner Results](/v1/docs/group-permission-view-learner-results-vlr) group permission to see any data. |
